Caring For Your Bridesmaid Dresses: What You Need to Know
A wedding is a special moment in one’s life. If you’ve been part of the bridal entourage of a dear friend, you know the excitement we’re talking about. You’re overjoyed for your friend and excited for the party later on in the day. Becoming a bridesmaid is an honor. Not only do you get to wear a stunning dress but also witness all the events so closely!
Now that the wedding’s done, and months pass by, you want to preserve your bridesmaid dress forever! You look at it with fond memories of the night and let’s be honest, who doesn’t want a gorgeous dress in their wardrobe?
Here are some ways you can care for bridesmaid’s dresses:
Read the labels
Bridesmaid dresses are often made of delicate fabric and have minute detailing. They need to be handled gently and not in the manner you treat your jeans. Before you toss the dress into the washing machine, read the label on the back.
Each fabric has its own technique to be washed. The dress can be labeled “air dry only” or “dry clean only”, you must follow the directions as given. Some dresses tend to fade when left in direct sunlight.
Fine fabrics have to be dealt with gently. The “gentle” cycle on the washing machine may be too harsh for bridesmaid’s dresses too. Learn to hand wash such intricate and expensive articles in your wardrobe.
Fill the sink or a large basin with lukewarm water when hand washing your clothes. Add some mild detergent to the water. Make sure you don’t use detergent soap as that tends to leave stains. Submerge the dress in water and move it around gently. Don’t ever scrub the cloth together, this will promote fraying or tears in the cloth. To remove the detergent from the clothes, repeat the process in plain water, till the soap washes out.
Don’t let stains hang around
Never let a stain sit around on a bridesmaid dress. The deeper into the layer it gets, the more difficult it is to remove. A quick treatment can help remove the stain for the most part.
Wet the area and rub off as much of the spillage as possible. Use lukewarm or cold water. Hot water can make certain stains more permanent.
Contrary to popular belief, dab the stain from behind the cloth. Set it face down of an absorbent towel. The water rinses out the stain and transfers it onto the towel.
Drying the dress
Delicate clothing needs to be air dried generally. Don’t make the mistake of putting your bridesmaid dress in the hot-air drier. The heat and tumbling motion will surely ruin the delicate fabric of the dress. It will also make it wrinkly.
Simply hang out your delicate dresses to air dry. Make sure they aren’t drying in direct sunlight to keep their color vibrant.
